As seems to be often the case with Moston Brook, it was a quarter to two on the Bluebell car-park and the first team still didn’t have eleven. With a couple of first team regulars (not mentioning any names but their surnames both begin with C) going AWOL, it was not looking promising for the firsts. However with Mark Roberts returning home from Ibiza early (must have been something he ate) and a phone call to Danny Grahamslaw, we were able to get a bare eleven. So there was now a mad rush in cars to try and get to Irlam for the half two kick-off. We didn’t quite make it on time, much to the annoyance of the referee who was worried about missing the start of the rugby, but we did finally kick-off about a quarter to three.
Now from most kick-offs, you would ideally look to keep the ball and try and give as many players an early touch of the ball as possible. However this was Johnny Munson on the kick off and he won’t mind me saying that the one thing he doesn’t lack is confidence. Daz touched him the ball, and decided to go on a run, beating about four players before finishing well and giving us a dream start. Irlam did start to get back in the game after their early set-back and were able to create a couple of half chances with some direct football and crosses from the wing. It was from one of those crosses that Irlam did actually equalise, their forward scoring at the back post, although it probably should have been dealt with better by the Moston defence. Moston hit back straight away and it was the next twenty minutes or so of the match that probably decided the eventual outcome. With the Irlam defence struggling to deal with the pace of Munson and Dunleavy up front, Moston found themselves getting great joy with balls of the top. One of these balls found its way to Johnny Munson who lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box and the ball went it off the post. It was soon 3-1 when Munson again got in behind the Irlam defence and finished well for his hat-trick. Soon after, it was Dunleavy who got in behind the back four but after trying to round the keeper and eventually being crowded out, he decided to lay the ball back to Munson who finished well from the edge of the box. The scoring was eventually completed by Mark Roberts who got on the end of an excellent cross from the right by Dunleavy. There was some debate as to whether it was Mark’s goal or not and there was no doubt it did come off the defender last. However, I did tell Kinder to give him the goal, although if there was a video and dubious goals panel in the L&C, he may have lost it.
Five-one at half time and the game was pretty much over as a contest and the second half became a bit of a non-event. Irlam did put plenty of effort in, but on the whole they were restricted to just the odd half chance and their threat was well sniffed out by the Moston back four and Beanhead. Moston did have other chances themselves, none better than when Dunleavy went on an excellent run into the Irlam box, only to be upended by an Irlam defender. However, Michael Brady’s penalty was well saved by the Irlam goalkeeper, low to his right. So the firsts keep their 100% record going with another convincing 5-1 victory. While the football wasn’t pretty at times and the game a little scrappy, Moston undoubtedly deserved their victory. You do feel that there is more to come from them, in terms of the quality of football and I’m sure this will come as the season goes on. However there is probably not a better strike partnership in this division as Dunleavy and Munson and you always feel that Moston will be still able to pick up wins, even when not at their best.
