The seconds returned to Smedley to face one of last seasons promoted sides. Moston were quick out of the traps and were able to get into their stride and for the first twenty minutes, especially, played some excellent football. Moston took the lead when an excellent through ball by Paul Vayro put Monyei in on goal and he fired a powerful shot on the half volley into the roof of the net. It was soon two, when Mike McElevaney popped up with another goal from midfield, heading in Edge’s corner at the near post. At this point in the game, there only looked like one winner and it seemed to be just a case of how many. However, credit to Aldermere who never stopped and were able to battle themselves back into the game as the half went on. They got a goal back when their right winger got in behind our back four and finished well across the keeper.

Almost from the kick-off though Moston gave themselves breathing space again, when Vayro’s quick feet got him away from a couple of defenders in the box and he finished low into the corner. Just before half-time, Aldermere again got themselves within a goal, their forward taking advantage of a mix up between two Moston players and mis-hitting a shot over Ian into the net. The second half proved to be a less eventful affair and most of it proved to be a scappy one. Aldermere did keep going until the end and never allowed Moston to get away from them. They never really looked like breaking down the Moston defence for the most part though, although Ian was forced into one good save after the Aldermere forward got in behind our back-four but Ian was off his line quickly to smother. Moston should have killed the game off, midway through the second half when the Aldermere defender was penalised for handball. However, Paul Vayro’s well struck penalty smashed against the bar. Moston were later unlucky not to add a fourth with the move of the match. Vayro, Monyei and Smith playing some excellent one and two touch football, resulting in Vayro picking out Monyei in the box but his fine volley was saved well by the keeper.

I was tempted to write a damning report about the referee but I decided not to give him the satisfaction of the attention and concentrate on the positives. Another win for the seconds and while we could have won by more, some sloppy play at times could also have cost us. I will say that certain players (they know who they are) dealt with the undoubted provocation, in uncharacteristically dignified way, something they have not always done in the past. We move on to a first against second clash against Old Strets next week and hopefully we will be able to regain top spot.
