Moston Brook 3rd's having had one of their best starts to a league campaign for many years entertained top of the league Cheadle Hulme Villa. Without Midfielder Mike Crump and the versatile Mozzer not to mention the evergreen Dave Kinder this would be a real test for the new and younger members of the squad. Even without these players the manager Mike Melia had the luxury of 15 players. The game started off at quite a subdued pace however it wasn't long before the Cheadle midfielders began to get a grip on the game. Only some excellent defending preventing them from scoring and to be honest a referee who would have been more at home in a residential care home.
The breakthrough came 10 mins before half-time when Cheadle were awarded a free-kick some 35 yards from goal. The ball was chipped into the box and what seemed an innocuous cross ended up in the back of the net. It later turned out to be an own goal by Barry Rogers. The rest of the first half proved to be a bit of a let down the only highlight being Barry's interpretation of a dancer from the Moulin Rouge doing the Can Can.
The second half started much as the first with Cheadle creating most if not all of the chances. Just as the spectators were commenting "Moston Brook don't even look like scoring" the game changed. Chris Ferns who was playing left back but looked like he was playing left wing cut in from the left and shot or was it crossed the ball there seemed little to worry about but their keeper believing the ball was running out of play let the ball go but unfortunately for him it nestled in the corner of the net bringing the score level. The game had suddenly changed Moston were becoming more threatening and the introduction of two subs Michael Eze and Manni seemed to be working. However there was a close call at the other end from a Cheadle corner a Bullet header which seemed destined for the corner of the net was cleared of the line by Adam Harrison. After that Moston Never looked back, with Cheadle tiring and moston's Youthful team (Barry Roger's apart) we began to take control. After a cross into the box and a couple of ricochets the ball fell to Johnny Tynan on the edge of the box who duly hit it on the half volley. Although the ball was on target the keeper somehow contrived to throw the ball into his own net. 2-1 to Moston Brook. After a couple of half Scares moston broke from the back with the Keeper feeding Manni down the right who fed Johnny Tynan. It seemed like Johnny had a lot of work still to do but he kept running and found himself in the box with one defender in front of him. A quick side step took care of the defender and he unleashed a fine right foot shot which the keeper got his hands to but ended up in the back of the net. 3-1 to Moston Brook. The game then was over and indeed it finished 3-1 to Moston Brook.
A fine win for Moston which pushes them to second in the table but we know we can play better football than we did today. Excellent performances from the back four and credit also goes to the two subs Michael Eze and Manni who probably had their best games for the team. Moston entertain Bottom of the table Old Chorltonians next week giving manager Mike Melia a Selection Headache. Does he keep the same team or risk upsetting some players by giving the returning Mike Crump and Mozzer a game? Who'd be a manager?
