Players were seriously short on the ground on Saturday for the both the first and second teams. With Johnny Munson suspended, Paul Vayro with the seconds and several no-shows, I had to play for the firsts and Karl Peak made yet another return to the club, which took the firsts up to a bare eleven. On an uneven pitch, it was difficult for both sides to play much football. Moston did have the better chances in the first half, with Darren Dunleavy and Monyei's hard work keeping the Eagle back four on their toes. Monyei battled his way through the Eagle defence, rounding the keeper but Eagle were able to get enough bodies back to block his shot. Darren Dunleavy, then went through but his lob went just past the post. Eagle did then take the lead when Moston didn't deal well with a corner from the left and the Eagle player was able to head in at the back post.
One-nil at half time and while Moston had created a few decent chances, we were disappointed with our first half performance and knew we needed to improve in the second half. The pattern of the second half continued much as the first, with Moston pressing for an equaliser but struggling to play much good football. Moston got the chance to equalise in the second half from the penalty spot after Monyei was fouled in the box, but Mike Mcneil saw his penalty smash against the bar. Moston did equalise soon after though, Monyei doing well to roll his defender in the box and finish well into the bottom corner. We hoped this would be the catalyst for us to go onto win the game but it was Eagle who took the lead again from another set-piece, their player forcing the ball home after a bit of a scramble in the area. It could have been worse but for an excellent one handed save from Beanhead, low to his right. Moston were able to lift themselves again and equalise again though, Dunleavy being brought down in the area and this time he picked himself up and put the penalty away into the bottom corner. It was nothing more than Daz deserved after an excellent hard working display
While the firsts will be disappointed with the result they can take some positives, in that they were able to twice come from behind to equalise, especially considering they were missing key players. They remain in pole position for the league and their game against Whalley Range in two weeks time now takes on added significance, with a win leaving them in an excellent position to go on and win the league.
Last weeks team: A McLaughlin, A Horrox, P Smith, J McNeill, D Grahamslaw, K Peak, M Brady,
M Roberts, R Monyei (1), D Dunleavy (1), M McNeill. Subs.
