Again suffering from several withdrawals, the seconds went to Beechfield for a cup fixture with only 12 players. With Joe away, our resident pensioner Dave Kinder, took his place on the bench as manager and emergency centre forward. The early pattern of play saw Beechfield trying to play passing football but Moston found that if they put them under pressure they made mistakes. From his own good pressure, Monyei forced the Beechfield defender into a mistake and got in on goal but screwed his shot wide. Monyei got in again from Terris's neat flick and this time he made no mistake, hitting the ball low into the corner. It was two, 10 minutes later, Monyei finishing well from a Terris cross. Monyei should have completed his hat-trick later in the half, missing an open goal after Terris had unselfishly passed the ball across goal for what seemed like a simple tap-in. Terris was then very unlucky not to open his account after his fine strike from the edge of the box came back off the inside of the post and out.  Moston continued to press for the rest of the first half and the game should really have been over by the break, Terris, Monyei and Fitzpatrick all missing chances which would have put a true reflection on our dominance in the first half.

The second half was a much less eventful affair as Moston seemingly took the foot off the gas and allowed our hosts more of the game. That said, they very rarely threatened our goal and relied more on efforts from long range, none of which really tested Ian in goal. Without playing as well in the second period, Moston still had more chances to add to their goal tally. None better than from the penalty spot after a Beechfield defender was penalised for handball. After Mark Terris missed last week, Mike McElvaney took on penalty taking duties but he saw his kick saved by the legs of the Beechfield keeper. I think Mark will be reclaiming penalty duties, next week after only a one week hiatus. After an injury to Chris Ferns, Dave Kinder saw it as an opportunity to bring himself on for the last 10 minutes or so, up front. He did get a chance to score in this time as he got in down the right hand channel but his shot got blocked by a mixture of defender and goalkeeper.

Our first half performance was one of our best team performances in quite a while and we really did deserve more goals than we got. While our second half performance was not as good, Beechfield never really looked like getting back in the game and we were certainly worthy winners. Let's hope that this win is a spur for a decent cup run this season.

Last weeks team: I Holcroft, P Smith, P McLoughlin, D Jackson, D Murdoch, C Ferns, R Henry,

M Fitzpatrick, M Terris, M McElvaney, R Monyei (2). Subs. D Kinder
