Second Round of the Rhodes Cup saw the 1st XI visit Premier League side Mellor at Woods Lane.
John Brady made his debut in the 1st XI due to Rossy getting lost on his way to the ground, Monyei having to return to the 2nd XI due to three late cry offs, and Crumpy arriving after we had left for Marple. John played for just under thirty minutes, and has gone into the clubs record books as the oldest player having played in the 1st XI. His performance belied his years.
In recent weeks Mellor have had, improved results which has lifted them off the bottom of the table. Their first half performance was one of a side with an air of confidence and they have a number of tall players, who are physically strong. The woodwork on two occasions came to Mostons rescue in the first half, and Beanhead produced a couple of good saves. Moston did force a number of corners but couldn't create an opening goal. HT 0-0.
The second half saw Moston lift their game, but they had a scare following another good save from Beanhead before Rossy cleared off Moston's goalline. Our breakthrough came when Paul Vayro having just received repairs to a possible dislocated thumb fired a terrific shot past the Mellor keeper. He then scored a second increasing our lead when he went on a typical mazy run which ended with him finishing coolly. Time now for Jonny Munson to score a brace with two cracking strikes taking his 1st XI total for the season to thirtysix. At four nil Moston continued to make chances with the best falling to Mike McNeill when on a one on one with Mellors keeper, he unfortunately wasn't able to capitalise. FT 4-0.
We are now through to the last sixteen with a tie in two weeks time against Spurley Hey from our division.
Last weeks team: A McLaughlin, A Horrox, J Brady, J McNeill, D Grahamslaw, M Roberts, M Brady, P Vayro (2), J Munson (2),
