On a wet and windy afternoon the local derby which should have been played just over the road on Broadhurst Playing Fields ended up being staged at the University Grounds at Willenhall Road Northenden. The match was delayed for almost thirty minutes due to the Mancunian Way being shut. However the referee was talked into playing the full match rather than thirty minutes each way.

This fixture was spiced up by the fact Newton Heath had at least four ex Moston Brook players in their line up and they were confident having just won their semi-final of the Manchester County Cup. Michael Brady had to drop into the centre of defence in the absence of Danny Grahamslaw with Michael McElvaney slotting into midfield.

The first half was twenty minutes old when Andy in goal hurt his wrist going down at his left hand post making a save. Unable to continue Crumpy took over and Chris Melia came on in midfield. Moston attempts on goal were few and far between with play being made difficult with the strong wind. Newton Heath had a number of good attempts from distance which Crumpy dealt with comfortably. HT 0-0.

The second half with the wind at our backs we thought we would be a bigger threat on the Newton Heath goal if we kept the ball on the floor and played football. We took the lead when Michael McElvaney forced home a ball in the box which hit the bar and deflected on it's way into the net of a Newton Heath defender on the line. Newton Heath in typical style came back at Moston with Marshy always looking dangerous. Newton Heath equalised when their right full back hit a shot twenty five yards out which flew into the net off the far post. A few minutes later they took the lead when Newton Heath rode a couple of tackles to create a good chance for another fine shooting finish. Moston made a couple of changes in an effort to get back into the match but struggled in front of goal. Newton Heath's third goal killed the game off when Marshy beat Crumpy to a cross to head home. FT 1-3.

Last weeks team: A McLaughlin, A Horrox, S Ross, J McNeill, M Brady, P Vayro, M McElvaney (1), M Crump Jnr, J Munson, D Dunleavy, M McNeill. Subs. C Melia, R Monyei, B Humphries
