The 1st XI went in search of their first league victory since mid January to pick up their challenge for the championship which is still in their own hands having lost only two matches all season.
Again as in recent matches the strong wind and a rutted football pitch were not conducive to playing fluent football. Both teams had difficulty in producing clear cut chances, but it was Moston who took the lead when Michael Brady got his head on to a ball on the edge of the six yard box to head home. On the half hour Gatley equalised when the Moston defence failed to clear the ball in their box, and the ball fell kindly for a Gatley player to finish from about eight yards. Moston took the lead again quite quickly with a move down the left when Rossy and Jonny Munson provided a ball for Darren Dunleavey to supply the finish. HT 2-1.
Gatley were still in the match and tried hard to find an equaliser. Moston's general pressure came only from their own mistakes but their third goal came courtesy of a Jonny Munson ball into the box being backheaded into his own goal by the Gatley centreback.
Moston's fourth came from the penalty spot after Darren Dunleavey had been brought down. Darren stepped down from taking the kick allowing Jonny to score clinically from the spot kick. Mark Roberts had a opportunity following a fine solo run but was thwarted by the Gatley keeper. FT 4-1.
They say to win a league you sometimes have to win ugly. This was one of those days.
