Whilst Moston's two promotion rivals were playing in the quarter finals of the Rhodes Cup, Moston were hoping to take the opportunity of increasing their lead at the top of the table. A couple of suspensions mean't that Chris Melia continued at the back, and Michael McElvaney got a start in the centre of midfield. Parrswood Celtic arrived at Smedley on the back of a 5-3 win against Newton Heath the previous week.
In the early stages of the game Jonny Munson had a couple of chances which unfortunately he was unable to convert. Both sides worked hard to create opportunities but both defences were holding firm, and neither keeper had to make a serious save. Jon had another chance when he and Paul Vayro took a short free kick but his shot went wide. The focus we should have had on the match in the first half was occasionally distracted when players questioned the referee and colleagues too much.
Typical April weather mean't one minute we were playing in sunshine the next we were facing driving hail, however we took the lead when the Parrswood defence failed to clear a cross into the box, and the ball fell to Darren Dunleavey who calmly slotted the loose ball home. HT 1-0.
The second half started in a similar vein to the first, until a couple of fine moves opened Parrswood up but we couldn't finish. Then a three man move put Mark Roberts in a position to fire home, and increase our lead. Moston then were awarded a free kick on the corner of the box, and whilst Parrswood were organising themselves Paul Vayro fired home. FT 3-0.
It was pleasing to keep a clean sheet which we haven't had in the league for a few matches. Another two week break before we play Stoconians, but it allows both Whalley Range, and Stretfordians a chance to play catch up with their games in hand.
