With the league already in the bag, the seconds took on Newton at Smedley, still with our 100% home record to defend and also needing a result to help us win the Aggregate trophy. Newton also needed a win to help their promotion push and it was them that seemed to start the game the better and seemed to be quicker tonevery ball. That said they weren't really looking like scoring and were relying on a more direct long ball game to try and unsettle us. We eventually gifted them the first goal, when their forward got in too easily down the right hand channel and finished well into the corner. Going behind early seemed to be a spur for Moston to up their game and get more of a foothold in the game. Lambert and McElvaney began to take more control in midfield and Vayro and Terris were becoming increasing threat going forward. Vayro going close with a couple of long range efforts and Terris heading over at the back post from an excellent cross from Vayro. Moston did equalise later when Vayro got in down the right and crossed to Terris, who finished well into the corner. Moston continued to play some good football, especially between Lambert, Terris and Vayro and could have easily gone in at half-time in front.
Moston started the second half as they finished the first and took the lead early into the second half, after a fine run from Vayro and he hit a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner. Moston created other chances after, with Kenyon going close after getting in down the right. When Moston didn't get a third goal, Newton started to come back into the game and seeing more of the game. That said, they weren't really creating many chances and Ian was relatively untroubled in goal. Then we gifted Newton an equaliser as we gave the ball back to Newton too easily in midfield and Newton broke on us and we didn't deal with the through ball and the Newton forward snuck around the back and placed it past Ian. Both sides pressed for a winner but neither could find one.
While disappointed not to win the game after playing the better football, in the larger scheme of things regarding the Aggregate trophy, it wasn't too bad a result. Apparently it now means we need two wins out of the first and second teams final three games to win it. This would be a first for the club and an excellent achievement.
