A return to Nichols to play Whalley Range who were currently third in the Premier division was the challenge for the 1st XI. Even though it was probably the earliest the !st XI had arrived at the ground for a home game Whalley Range were already there completing a warm up routine.
The match began with Whalley Range asking the questions, and Moston sluggish in trying to get a hold on the game. After about twenty minutes Whalley took the lead when from a corner the ball hit the bar and failing to clear the situation Whalley took the lead. Moston's first opportunity to equalise fell to Daz but he chose to play a ball to the far post in stead of shooting for Michael Cahill and it evaded him. At this stage we needed the defence to push out quicker to help condense the play to make us more competitive. Just before half time Michael Cahill brought us back into the game when smashing home a left foot shot from a tight angle. HT1-1.
The second half saw Moston have more possession of the ball than they had in the first. However Whalley were proving difficult opponents and it was a match where both sides were striving for a second goal. It came Moston's way with Michael scoring his and our second. He then could have had a hat-trick with two good chances. One where he fained to shoot then his shot was somehow saved by Whalley's keeper, and the other saw a shot with the outside of his right boot which just went wide of the post. Paul Vayro who had come on as a substitute had a couple of runs which just failed to produce the final product.
At 2-1 Moston hadn't taken the opportunity to finish the game off, and Whalley who had played three up front all match were still in the game, and their centre forward was proving a handful. Moston had to re-organise when an injury to Murdoch meant Brady had to go into the back four. Beanhead was in for a busy time and in the last five minutes Whalley forced a number of corners but Beanhead when asked caught the ball or punched well. A number of important blocks two from substitute Michael McNeill prevented Whalley from equalising, and Moston took all three points. FT 2-1.
