The 1st XI returned to league action on Nichols following their good Lancashire County Cup run. The opposition were Old Ashtonians who we had drawn against 2-2 back in October, and it was important we got back to winning ways in an attempt to put pressure on Mellor and Old Trafford who are occupying the top two positions in the Premier Division who though we are eight points behind with, we still have two games in hand.

As with a number of games this season it took a little time to get into our tempo. Old Ashtonians had the early possession with their number eight seeing quite a bit of the ball. However they failed to capitalise with a number of opportunites especially from free kicks just on the edge of the Moston penalty box. As the first half progressed the Ashtonian keeper became an obstacle to the Moston attack pulling off several fine saves. Jonny Munson though broke the deadlock when having been put through on goal the Ashtonian keeper hesistated for a split second giving Jonny the opportunity to slide the ball under his body to give Moston the lead. HT 1-0.

After about ten minutes into the second half we were awarded a penalty when Jonny and the Ashtonian left back contested a long ball, and the referee decided that the defenders challenge was a foul. Michael Brady slotted the spot kick into the bottom corner of the net. The game began to open up with Ashtonians trying to get back into the game with them forcing a number of corners. Moston scored a third when Jonny rounded the keeper to score his second. Michael Brady scored a second and Mostons fourth when a fine move down the left ended with a decent ball into the box with Michael turning his defender to shoot home. Mostons fifth and Jonnys hat-trick came when he shot from wide on the right hand side with Daz following it into goal just to make sure. Jonny then got sent off for a second bookable offence for handball with only a few minutes left to go. FT 5-0.

A clean sheet was pleasing and our next test is at Old Stretfordians next week
