TREMENDOUS FIRST SEASON FOR THE `BROOK`

Anyone that has read the match report this week will no doubt be thinking that it was surprisingly short by my standards, but I can assure you there was a reason behind it. The main reasons being I wanted to reflect on the season has a whole and the website would have crashed if I had. So here we are with one game to go in a season that didn’t hold out much hope if you were to take our pre-season into account last year. If you would have said to me or Gary back in April that with one game to go our record would read played 33, won 24, drawn 6 and lost only 3 we would have probably rolled about in laughter.  Credit has got to go to the boys for what is truly a remarkable season. To score 70 goals and only concede 26 gives them a near 3 to 1 ratio which is a remarkable achievement. Every player has more than played his part, in a team that has more than held its own in a league with so many decent teams to play against. There have been some tremendous games along the way with plenty of highlights to savour; Oliver’s half way line goals; Ben’s last minute equalizer against Stalybridge; Cole’s goal line clearance against Chaddy End in the dying minutes; Sam’s double save heroics against Stalybridge; Taylor’s thunderbolt from the halfway line; Ethan’s four against Broadway; Jaden calmly rounding the keeper with a super finish; Kieran’s confidence boosting first goal that sent him on a fabulous scoring run....all great memories. I am sure everyone will agree that we are now a team which everybody respects for trying to play football the correct way. We are creating a spirit within the team that other teams have failed to build. Without this spirit we would not have achieved half the success we have, and added to that the boys are now showing improved techniques and skill. We will not kid ourselves that we are at the optimum we should be at this point, but we are more than pleased with the boys first season. We now have eight players who are very composed on the ball, not frightened of any situation, willing to work for the team and wanting to improve has individuals. There has been teething problems, not just with the players, but with parents and coaches which you get in every team, that has been sorted out amicably. You are going to get situations that arise, because there is a natural competitive edge to any sport, despite the age group we are at. Has coach’s in our `rookie` season, Myself and Gary are going to make mistakes and have made mistakes, the important thing is that we can learn from them and make better judgment in the future. We don’t claim to be Alex Ferguson and Carlos Quieroz, but we think we work well together on a project that is purely voluntary. Gary takes a lot of pressure off me, and he is right when he says there is a lot more to do than just turning up on a Thursday and Saturday taking money off people. There has been times when Gary has questioned whether it is all worth it, me too, but we believe we can do a very good job in this team, and seeing the boys smiling faces makes it all worthwhile. The only rule we have is that we do it our way and nobody interferes with what we feel is the best way forward for the team in general. Next week will be our final game of the season, due to the postponement of the Chaddy End game the week later, but we have tournaments starting with the Avro tournament on Sunday which we are looking forward to in the post season. With the season nearly over, it is time for Gary and Me to sit down and chat about who our allocated four trophies will go to this year. One of the categories will be `player`s player of the year`. Please could you assist your child in the filling out of the form overleaf, and could you refrain from influencing his decision in any way.  Also could you keep this information confidential, has it is unfair to the unsuccessful nominees to hear of their disappointment early. The fact we only have four trophies to give out means some boys will miss out but it is no reflection on their season or attitude because without these team mates the winners could not win. Every player has been outstanding. To assist the boys in their decision I have wrote an appraisal of each player on why I think they should vote for their team mates.I would like to thank all the parents for their continued support, and look forward to another successful year next season.                                                                                        SM........GL
