The seconds this week took on third in the table Chorltonians at Nicholls. Big surprise to start the day, in that not only did we have thirteen players but we were also able to name the same starting outfield players for the first time in about a season and a half. The only change being Jordan Mearman having to replace Beanhead in goal, who has had to return to the first team. Not through is sparkling form, mind you, merely by default.
The early exchanges were pretty even as neither side took control of the game. However a brief slip in concentration in the Moston backline and the Chorlts forward got in behind and hit the ball into the bottom corner. The first half continued to be pretty tight but Moston fell further behind to a fine strike from outside the box which flew over Jordan and into the net. Moston continued to have there fair share of the game but without really created any clear-cut chances despite getting into several promising situations.
Half-time and while two-nil down, Moston still felt they were very much in the game. A reshuffle with Chris Melia replacing Ryan Scallon in defence and Hughes's half-time team talk (Winston Churchill esque as he puts it) seemed to do the trick as Moston started the second half well and began to assert more and more pressure on the Chorltonians goal. We eventually got back in the game as Chay Edwards got in down the left hand channel, cutting the ball across goal for Thomas Cains to knock in at the back post. Moston, then got themselves level with a well worked second. Danny Dobson's fine through ball releasing Caines down the right hand channel and as the keeper came out, he lobbed the ball over him and into the far corner of net, for his second of the match. He did have a chance for a hat-trick late on but misjudged his attempted header from a right wing cross.
Another much-improved performance from the seconds and with a bit of luck may have nicked all three. Again all the back four put in good performances and Jordan did well in goal. Ennie and Andy Feeke put in good performances in midfield and Thomas Caines has made a real difference to the side in the last two games, with his ability to win headers, hold the ball, something we have really struggled with throughout the season. After a difficult run against some of the top teams, we now go in against the bottom two sides. These are games we really need to win, if we are to stay out of trouble.
