The seconds this week travelled to Salford to take on Barr Hill. With John Hughes giving his level 2 coaching expertise (as he put it) to the Under 13's in their league cup final, along with Heffer, I had to take the team. With only thirteen named, we were soon down to twelve with Chay Edwards unavailable. It became eleven soon after as the firsts took Steve Hamlet. After nicking Mike Seers from the thirds, we eventually travelled with twelve. Changes from last week included Joe Barlow coming in from the fourths to play in the centre of defence with Danny Dobson, Wayne Moran moving into midfield, and Dhammy partnering Mike Seers in attack.
Moston began the first half the brighter and had much the better of things for the most part. Mike Seers was unlucky not to have scored two early on. Firstly as a fine ball from Danny Dobson, releasing him down the left hand channel and despite getting to the ball before the on rushing goalkeeper, he couldn't quite get enough power on his shot and the defender was able to get back and clear off the line. Seers got in again soon after and this time got hold of his shot but the keeper was able to parry away. More good work from Seers and after beating a couple of men, his shot was parried out by the keeper straight to Michael Budzik, with the goal at his mercy but unfortunately he decided to take a fresh air shot. After more good work down the right from Seers again, he layed the ball across goal to Wayne Moran but on the half volley Wayne pulled the ball wide of the target. Then as the first half came to a close, came the sucker punch. The Barr Hill got in down the left, despite seemingly being in an off-side position and he crossed to the back post and ball was knocked into the net from close range.
While behind at half-time, Moston should have been buoyed by a pretty good first half performance where we had created several excellent chances. However, in the second half, Barr Hill came more in the game and started to have chances of their own. We still had a couple of chances ourselves, with both Dhammy and Mike McNeil forcing the Barr Hill keeper into saves. Barr Hill, were looking more likely to get the second goal though, although they were grateful to a comedy of errors for the second goal. Firstly as Russ threw the ball out to Wayne Moran, the hole in his boot seems to have got so big that the ball can fit through it. Then from the throw-in, Moston fail to clear the danger and the eventual shot is saved by Russ with his legs. Unfortunately the ball spins up and back towards the goal. Russ get backs and tries to clear the ball, only preceding to punch the ball into his own net. Our performance became more and more ragged after that and Barr Hill could have taken greater toll, eventually just adding a third from close range. Moston did continue to create the odd chance, mind with Budzik eventually connecting with a shot but it was well blocked. We eventually got a consolation goal as Dhammy Bammydele got in down the right. His shot was parried out by the keeper and the master poacher that is myself, following up to knock in.
A disappointing result but there were plus points that we can take from this game. Especially the number of chances we created which was comfortably more than any of our previous games this season. That said, we were punished again for individual errors, which has been a familiar story at times this season. Good performances from Joe Barlow in defence and Mike Seers, especially in the first half provided us with an excellent goal threat and was unlucky not to have scored at least a couple of goals.
